Competition has had a strong influence on the way we shoot handguns. It has also had an influence on the handguns we shoot. Competition is a tough proving ground. Center fire handguns for home or personal defense, even for police duty, might get fired 200 times a year, if that. Among serious competitors 1525,000 rounds annually is not unusual; some fire considerably more. Such regimens quickly uncover any weaknesses or reliability issues. Competitors look for any handgun modification that might confer an advantage. To an outsider the time, effort and money put into modifications which might gain a point or two seem absurd, but never underestimate the competitive drive.
