Since I carry a gun with me nearly all the time, I'm always looking at the options available with an eye toward balancing firepower and concealability. For the last couple of years I've been trading off between a S&W 340PD and a Springfield Armory subcompact XD in 9mm. I consider the little titanium J Frame S&W a "must have" carry gun, and I have it with me whenever the need for concealability outweighs my perceived need for firepower. Not that the Federal 147-grain .38 +P loads lack sufficient power, the limitation of five rounds could be a drawback in a fight with six adversaries. In some situations, all I can conceivably carry is the little 11-ounce five-shot revolver. But, sometimes I need to carry more gun, even in a concealed carry situation, so I've been opting to carry the XD with 10 + 1 rounds of 147-grain Federal HST ammo. As compact guns go, I think it is a great balance between size and having enough rounds. Get the full story in the American Handgunner Personal Defense 2008 Annual! |

| Considering the possible negative effect of the upcoming national elections on gun ownership, I think the prudent would consider acquiring whatever personal defense equipment they feel they might want for the future as soon as possible. This is not doomsday thinking, it's simply a strong possibility yet to be determined by the voting public that historically hasn't always been the brightest light bulb in the 40-watt box. | Some subjects just seem to breed misinformation. Next to getting rich in real estate and developing washboard abs in only five minutes a day, self-defense is one of the "best fertilized" topics out there. It seems every veteran streetfighter, ex-Special Forces soldier, bouncer, brawler, doorman and milk monitor now has his own revolutionary new fighting system guaranteed to turn you into a stone-cold killer without ever getting off the couch. For 40 years of my life I have taught as a combat infantryman, a police officer, a firearms instructor and a teacher of firearms and tactics. I have come to the conclusion most of what gets a person in trouble is a lack of personal awareness; followed by a lack of personal tactics to address the fight. After my time spent in this field, there are some things that hold to a pretty steady constant. Clearing a stairwell in 2007 in Iraq can be how much different than clearing a stairwell in Stalingrad in 1942? After this experience and teaching, I wanted to share some thoughts and concepts for personal tactics and awareness to consider for daily use. | Free-for-all combat and friendly card games have diametrically opposed rules, with direct application to the use of lights and lasers. The Combat Rules are, Load The Dice, Stack The Deck, Cheat, and Win! There ain't no room for Hoyle or the Marquis of Queensbury in a Sadr City slum shootout or an attack in front of an ATM. You never give up an ace in the hole never fail to capitalize on an edge over your opponent. That being said, there are still lots of folks bearing arms who consider lights and lasers to be the tac-toys of ill-trained gear-freaks who need unnecessary peripherals, and their use somehow is "unfair" in a fight.
