| Two Baers Are Better Than One I am already the proud owner of two of Les’ creations; a Thunder Ranch Special and Stinger are frequent companions of mine. I first put my hands on a Les Baer pistol about 12 years ago. A retired golf pro who frequented the same range as I did had what I called a battery of Baers. I don’t remember exactly how many he had, but if he had one he had a half dozen. First Sight The gentlemen saw my eyes go wide when he uncased the collection of 1911s, “want to shoot them?” he asked. Does a hobby horse have a... you get the picture. He told me he had to break two of them in so I could shoot as much as I wanted and I did. | Dry fire is a good way to practice basic shooting skills. When I was in the Army we were shown how to use a pencil while dry firing a 1911. The pencil method provides good feedback but can’t be used during practical exercises — it falls out. Dry firing is very hard to incorporate into tactical drills because while concentrating on tactics or other weapon craft issues, it’s difficult to stay focused on how well your trigger squeeze coincides with your sight alignment. | Safariland’s Tom Campbell, formerly of Smith & Wesson and “the esteemed maker of once fired brass,” was one of my first shooting professional heroes. That was, until he almost killed himself when he crashed his plane and got married, which destroyed the utopian bachelor image that I had of him. Tom was not a reloader, thus the above sobriquet, but was quite inventive when it came to shooting competition. | In the 1970s it was my regular habit to read section 640 GUNS every day in the morning paper classifieds as well as attend all the local gun shows. With this diligence I expected to find one special sixgun per year. It may be a like new 3-1/2" Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum, or an unfired Old Model Ruger .41 Magnum, even a Second Generation Colt Single Action. | Those who weren’t around at the time can’t even begin to understand how exciting it was when the first true firearms magazine arrived. It was January 1955 when that first issue of GUNS appeared. Up to this time shooters and sixgunners found their information in the pages of sporting and hunting magazines and, of course, the American Rifleman. Now we had a real guns magazine! If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery it did not take long for GUNS to be flattered. Guns & Ammo began as a quarterly in 1958, Gun World arrived in 1960, and Shooting Times started with a newspaper format in the early 1960s. | I have a long time personal interest in the application of night vision devices and similar equipment to current combat conditions. Ranging from the butt stomping Spectre gunship to the individual troop in combat with either goggles or weapons mounted systems; all of it is a lure to me.
